Astronomy books for eclipse day

Eclipse day books The Friends are offering a nice assortment of astronomy-themed books, magazines, and videos to celebrate eclipse day on August 21st. You’ll find the books on the freestanding display near the entrance to the Tualatin Library.

The Tualatin Library has also scheduled activities for the day. They have a limited number of eclipse glasses to distribute starting at 9:15 am in the library’s lobby. They will also screen NASA’s livestream of the eclipse in the Community Room. For additional information about the library’s events, please check their website.

Volunteer help wanted

Ongoing sale Part time rewarding jobs with flexible hours. Excellent opportunity to meet new Friends and be part of a great team. No experience required, just a love of books and a desire to support the Tualatin Public Library.

The Friends are looking for volunteers for two important positions in the organization:

1. Chair of the Ongoing Sales Team. You’ll lead the team that markets and stocks the sale shelves inside the library on a daily basis. Our ongoing sale is a major source of revenue for the Friends. Training will be provided and approximate time commitment is six to seven hours per week. Come lead our Ongoing Book Sale Team!

Responsibilities include:

Meeting monthly with the rest of the volunteer team to develop schedules, discuss pricing, and plan future activities.
Communicating with the Ongoing team by email as needed.
Working with chairs of the Amazon and Book Sale teams.
Providing a report of Ongoing activities to the Friends’ Board president before meetings.
Communicating with the library staff as needed.
Coordinating inventory control and administrative tasks important to the operation of the team.

2. Amazon Marketplace Product Lister. You’ll list donated books, DVDs, and miscellaneous other products on the Friends Amazon Marketplace. All items are evaluated by other team members to make sure that they meet listing criteria, and are then flagged for the Product Lister. Potential volunteers should be detail oriented and have strong computer skills. Training will be provided and approximate time commitment is four to five hours per week. Border Collie International slated for Summer Reading on the Commons

Summer Reading on the Commons kicks off on Tuesday, June 20th with Border Collie International, a performing canine team of rescued border collies. These entertaining dogs will perform routines with football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and Frisbee.

The fun begins at 7 pm. Tualatin Commons Park is located at 8325 SW Nyberg St.

Summer Reading on the Commons is supported by a donation from the Friends of the Tualatin Library.

2017 Summer Reading kickoff

Build a Better World The weekend of June 2-4 marks the start of Summer Reading 2017 at the Tulatin Public Library. Kick-off events are scheduled for kids, teens, and the whole family:

Teen Extravaganza. Sign up for summer reading, get a free book, play bingo, cake walk, and more. Free for grades 6 to 12 in the Teen Room. Friday, June 2nd, 6 pm to 8:30 pm.

The Reptile Man. Richard Ritchey, the Reptile Man, presents 15-20 reptiles in an engaging 1-hour program designed to educate and entertain. The Reptile Man is a full-time professional herpetologist who has been performing in Oregon and Washington for the past 24 years. Free for all ages in the Library Community Room. Saturday, June 3rd, 2 pm to 3 pm.

Music by The Junebugs. The Junebugs combine high-energy pop with Pacific Northwest folksy goodness to create a genre-bending sound you can kick up your heels to. Free for all ages by the Library Hearth. Sunday, June 4th, 2 pm to 3 pm.

All three events are supported by a donation from the Friends.

Talbots fundraiser extended

Talbots On Thursday evening Karen Uboldi represented the Friends at the Talbots fundraiser, telling customers about our mission, inviting them to join us, publicizing our book sale, and selling book bags. We netted eleven new members at this event thanks to Karen’s efforts!

Talbots donated 10% of select sales that day to the Friends and yesterday they announced that they’ve extended the fundraiser through Sunday. Remember: to qualify, shoppers need to indicate that their purchases support the Friends.

Karen’s a fan. “If you’re considering treating yourself to something new for Mothers Day, a summer celebration, wedding, birthday or vacation, Talbots has beautiful colors to choose from and the styles are fantastic,” she said. “And they have a store-wide 30% off sale this weekend.”
