Summer reading in Tualatin

Summer readingThe Tualatin library has challenged the community to read 2.5 million minutes this summer. Kids, teens, and adults can participate. As Tualatin’s readers turn in their reading logs, the SuperReader on the skyscraper shown here will climb toward the top of the building. The sign at the bottom of the building says “Read to new heights. Watch SuperReader soar to our reading goal of 2.5 million minutes.” You can track the community’s progress at the library during July and August.

At our most recent meeting, the Friends board voted to fund a celebration if we reach the goal. It will be held on Sunday, August 30, between 2 and 4 pm. Watch this space for details.

If you and your family haven’t already signed up for summer reading, we hope you’ll do so soon.

Friends book sale scheduled: June 5-6

June booksaleWe will hold our annual Summer Used Book Sale on Friday, June 5 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, June 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Community Room at the library. The book sale moved to early June last year so customers could stock up on books and other materials for the summer months.

This sale will feature a huge selection of media items—music CDs, DVDs, audiobooks, even VHS tapes for those who still have a VHS player around the house. There will be a bigger-than-usual section of Large Print books for this sale, and plenty of non-fiction books in every area of interest. The bargain tent outside will offer paperback fiction titles this year, some available to browse and buy individually and others packaged in “Bargain Boxes” for $3. Most book prices are in the 50 cent to $1 range, except for some especially nice books in the “Quality Books at Great Prices” section with prices as marked, most from $2-$5.

There is always a line when the sale opens on Friday, so arrive early for the best selection. If you like a bargain though, all books and media will be 50% off on Saturday after 2:00 p.m., including the special priced books.

Just a reminder that credit cards are now being accepted for payment, as well as cash and checks, so there is no reason you can’t pick up books for gifts or to add to your own collection.

We can always use volunteers to help with the sale. Please contact Allison Austin if you’d like to volunteer.

Summer reading starts May 31st

Summer reading starts May 31stThe Tualatin Library’s 2015 summer reading program will start this year with a kickoff party on Sunday, May 31st, 2 pm to 4 pm. Kids can play carnival games, watch a magic show, get a balloon creation, and, of course, sign up for the Summer Reading Club and get a free book! This year’s theme is “Every Hero has a Story.”

Teens have their own program with prizes for reading at least 20 hours over the summer. There will be a variety of teen programs at the library including a Top Chef Competition, Comic Workshop, Retro Game Day, and more.

Participants in this year’s adult reading program will receive a voucher for one free item from the Friends used book sale shelf in the library. Adults will also be entered in a drawing for a grand prize gift basket with goodies from local merchants.

Forms for entering the kid, teen, and adult summer reading programs are available at the library. The library is challenging the Tualatin community to read at least 2.5 million minutes this year. Please join and help us reach that goal.

The Friends donated more than $9000 to the library this year for books and programming for the Summer Reading Program. We hope you’ll enjoy it!
