Grupo Condor to perform at the library

Grupo Condor will perform Latin American folk music at the Tualatin Library on Saturday, October 8th, 2 pm to 3 pm. This group expertly blends the traditional musical styles of all of Spanish-speaking America with string, flute, and percussion instruments.

After the performance kids grades three and up will make their own pan flutes in a workshop taught by the performers. Preregistration is required for the workshop which has a limit of 25 participants.

A Friends of the Tualatin Library donation in support of Hispanic Heritage Month made this performance at the library possible. It’s free and open to the public; we hope you enjoy it.

Edna Vazquez to perform at the library

Edna Vazquez will sing Spanish-language ballads with folk, rock, pop, and Mariachi influences at the Tualatin Library on Saturday, September 17th, 3 pm to 4 pm.

Vazquez was born in Mexico and sent to the US by her parents when she was a teenager. Since arriving in Oregon, she’s become a musician who performs original compositions that pay homage to her international influences with a passion that comes through in every note of her music. She lifts the audience’s spirits during her live performances with a vocal range that allows her to transition seamlessly between folk, rock, pop and Mariachi, all while exploring jazz stylings.

Friends reach milestone in online book sales

Online book sales Eleanore Mickus reported that the Friends reached a milestone this week — we listed the 5000th book on our Amazon online book store. “We listed our first book on September 12, 2011, so it’s taken a bit less than five years to reach this point,” Eleanore said. “This may not have taken a village but it sure took a lot of Friends, hundreds of hours of work, and much appreciated assistance from the library staff.”

In order to be listed in the online book store, books must meet certain criteria, so the book sale committee sorted and culled thousands more to reach this milestone. In case you’re curious, the 5000th book was a business law textbook. When priced right, textbooks can be good sellers in the online book store while they typically don’t sell in our semi-annual or ongoing book sales.

Not every book listed on Amazon sells. If they don’t sell in a reasonable length of time, we de-list them to conserve space in our workroom. Of the 5000 listed so far, we sold around 3000.

Of course, listing the books is just one step in the workflow. When we receive notice that books have sold, volunteers pick them up at the library, weigh, wrap, and deliver to the post office for shipment. The Amazon feedback and our five star rating prove that the online team is doing a fabulous job.
