Friends support Oregon Battle of the Books

OBOBThe Friends contributed $2000 to fund the Tualatin Library’s Oregon Battle of the Books program. OBOB is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and comprehension initiative for students in 3rd-12th grades. Our contribution will pay for books for fifteen 3rd-5th grade students. Each student will receive two books per month from September through February.

With OBOB, students are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints. The mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, promote academic excellence, and encourage cooperative learning and teamwork among students.

Summer reading in Tualatin

Summer readingThe Tualatin library has challenged the community to read 2.5 million minutes this summer. Kids, teens, and adults can participate. As Tualatin’s readers turn in their reading logs, the SuperReader on the skyscraper shown here will climb toward the top of the building. The sign at the bottom of the building says “Read to new heights. Watch SuperReader soar to our reading goal of 2.5 million minutes.” You can track the community’s progress at the library during July and August.

At our most recent meeting, the Friends board voted to fund a celebration if we reach the goal. It will be held on Sunday, August 30, between 2 and 4 pm. Watch this space for details.

If you and your family haven’t already signed up for summer reading, we hope you’ll do so soon.
