Book sale volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed for the Spring book sale, May 3-5, 2019.

We need volunteers to help with the set-up of the sale Friday morning and the take down on Sunday afternoon. During sale hours, we need volunteers to support the cashiers by tallying up sales and also to assist our customers on the sale floor. Set up for the sale will occur on Friday 5/3/19, from 9 am to 1 pm. Shifts through the weekend during the sale are for 2-3 hours at a time.

Sale hours are:

  • Friday, May 3rd, 2 – 6 pm (members only for the first hour)
  • Saturday May 4th, 10 am – 4 pm
  • Sunday May 5th, 1 – 4 pm

Our volunteer sign-ups are automated with Sign-Up Genius, an online volunteer recruitment service. Sign-Up Genius is easy; you don’t need an account with them to use it. Here are the steps:

A Thank You to Umpqua Bank

Umpqua BankWe want to thank Umpqua Bank and its employees Samantha, Logan, and Anna for their support at our recent semi-annual book sales. Umpqua Bank is committed to community service and encourages staff to volunteer up to 40 hours each year (paid!) with nonprofit organizations in communities where the bank does business.

Umpqua explains its community service philosophy on its website:
Here at Umpqua, investing is who we are, what we are, and why we are—but we’re not talking about your money. We’re talking about shaping our neighborhoods and engaging with our neighbors through community giving and community action.

During the past year Umpqua Bank donated more than 50,000 hours to the community through the Connect Volunteer Network. Umpqua also makes financial donations to nonprofits through the Umpqua Bank Charitable Foundation.

Mbrascatu to perform at the libraryy

MbrascatuThe five-member indie band Mbrascatu will perform at the Tualatin Public Library on Sunday January 22, 2017 at 2 pm in the next installment of the Library’s Sunday Music Series. Mbrascatu draws from diverse European and American roots to create a unique signature sound.

Pronounced mm-brah-ska-too, the group’s name is the nickname of band leader Andrea Algieri’s grandfather, a native of Luzzi, Italy. The band combines banjo, violin, viola, ukulele, guitar, bass, drums, lapsteel and Italian vocals to create indie world-folk music.

Sean Gaskill to perform at the library

Sean GaskillSean Gaskill will play the kora and sing in a performance at the Tualatin Library on Sunday, November 20, 2016, 2 pm to 3 pm. The kora is an ancient 21-stringed harp from West Africa. Sean will sing traditional pieces from the kora’s musical repertoire as well as some of his own personal compositions.

The kora is native to the Mande peoples who live in Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea Bissau. The music is traditionally played by oral and musical historians known as Griots (Gree-ohs). The kora is a melodic and seemingly peaceful instrument, which is somewhat contrary to the lyrics in its musical repertoire. Some songs tell ancient stories of war and hardship, while others praise people of high political status and those who helped expand the Mande Empire.

A Friends of Tualatin Library donation supports the library’s Sunday Music Series.
