Meet our super-senior volunteers

Virginia Green and Eleanore Mickus don’t mind telling you their ages. Virginia, at left in the photo, is 90, Eleanore 85. We call them our super-senior volunteers, not necessarily because they’re super-old, but because they’re super-friendly, super-talented, and super-active with the Friends.

Virginia and Eleanore team up on Mondays to work on our ongoing booksale in the library. They restock the shelves, update pricing stickers, and process book donations from the public. Eleanore also serves as Vice-President on our Board while Virginia serves as an informal secretary to the Ongoing Booksale Committee. Both of them pitch in with our larger community book and media sales.

Did we mention they’re super-talented? Virginia is an award-winning artist. She’s active in the Wild Over Watercolor artists’ guild and a group of artists that meets weekly on Zoom to support and challenge each other. Eleanore expresses her creative side with quilting. She’s currently working with a Tualatin Historical Society committee to present a three-day quilt show, “The Fabric of our Lives,” which is coming up March 9-11, 2023.

Virginia and Eleanore agree that having a good attitude can make a big difference as you get older. We invite you to say hello to these two super-friendly volunteers when you see them at the Tualatin Library.

Our logo

One of the many tasks the founding members of the Friends faced in 2005 was to design a logo. Since none of the early members were particularly artistic, they decided to hold a contest. The winning entry, shown at far left, was designed by Kira Burge, a high school senior who went on to study art and business at the University of Oregon. Kira designed the logo to represent the concepts of growth, learning, and connection. An article about Kira and the winning design appeared in a local newspaper in July 2005. The original logo was “freshened up” by a local graphic designer in 2017; that version is shown at near left.

In 2022 we redesigned our website. Board member Linda Kilgore stepped up to design a new logo which is included in the header of each website page. Linda designed a family of logos in different sizes that we use on our letterhead, newsletter, brochures, and flyers as well as the website. We think the whimsical, colorful books and modern font set the tone for our organization’s fun and friendly culture.

The Friends of Tualatin Library Fall Membership Drive is underway; the annual mailing went out to members on November 15th.

We’re proud of all we’ve accomplished in the past year:

  • We’re on track to raise more than $16,000 this year through membership dues and book sales.
  • We’ve donated almost $13,000 this year to the Tualatin Library for a variety of programs.
  • We’re making technology upgrades, including the re-designed website.

If you’re already a member of the Friends, please consider taking a more active role through volunteering. And, if you’re not a member yet, we hope you’ll join. It’s easy to renew or join on our Membership page.
