Friends reach milestone in online book sales

Online book salesEleanore Mickus reported that the Friends reached a milestone this week — we listed the 5000th book on our Amazon online book store. “We listed our first book on September 12, 2011, so it’s taken a bit less than five years to reach this point,” Eleanore said. “This may not have taken a village but it sure took a lot of Friends, hundreds of hours of work, and much appreciated assistance from the library staff.”

In order to be listed in the online book store, books must meet certain criteria, so the book sale committee sorted and culled thousands more to reach this milestone. In case you’re curious, the 5000th book was a business law textbook. When priced right, textbooks can be good sellers in the online book store while they typically don’t sell in our semi-annual or ongoing book sales.

Not every book listed on Amazon sells. If they don’t sell in a reasonable length of time, we de-list them to conserve space in our workroom. Of the 5000 listed so far, we sold around 3000.

Of course, listing the books is just one step in the workflow. When we receive notice that books have sold, volunteers pick them up at the library, weigh, wrap, and deliver to the post office for shipment. The Amazon feedback and our five star rating prove that the online team is doing a fabulous job.

And it must be noted that the Friends book sale volunteers are a congenial bunch who insist on having a good time. If you’d like to be part of this effort, please contact us.

Friends book sale: May 13-15

Friends book saleA huge inventory of used books and an extra Sunday sale day will give shoppers the chance to pick up loads of books and media materials for the summer at the Friends of the Library Used Book Sale in May.

We will hold our semi-annual Used Book Sale on Friday, May 13 from 3—6:00 p.m.; Saturday, May 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; and now on Sunday, May 15 from 1—4:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the library. During Sunday sale hours, regularly priced books will be $2 for a bag (bag is provided) and media and special priced items will be 50% off. The best selection will be available on Friday afternoon and bargain prices on Sunday.

The huge inventory of items for this sale includes:

  • Fiction and non-fiction titles for adults and children
  • Lots of audiobooks for road trips and commuters
  • DVDs (fiction, non-fiction, TV series)
  • A large number of children’s picture books
  • Juvenile books for children 6-12 years of age; and young adult books including graphic novels and manga in the “Bargain Tent”
  • Tons of paperback science fiction

Most book prices are in the 50 cent to $1 range, but there will be a good selection of especially nice books and DVDs with prices as marked from $2-5. Just a reminder that credit cards are now being accepted for payment, as well as cash and checks, so there is no reason you can’t pick up books for gifts or to add to your own collection.

We can always use volunteers to help with the sale, especially since we are expanding our hours to Sunday. Please contact Allison Austin at [email protected] at or leave your name and phone number at the Library Help Desk if you are interested.
